Department as Object

What's in this post?
Sometimes you don’t need to plan every room — you just want to block out zones. That’s what Department Objects are for: quick, high-level space planning at the macro level.– Aman Jain, Product Specialist
What’s New
Department as Object
You can now draw or generate Department Objects to plan areas at a departmental level — perfect for early-stage planning when you want to define zones without diving into room-by-room layouts.
How it works:
If a space name and department name match, the object becomes a Department Object
Create them by:
- Drawing manually on the canvas
- Pasting program data with a department total
- Using AI-Program, which auto-generates department masses
You can then either:
- Place individual spaces inside the department mass
- Split the department mass into spaces later
Why It Matters
Department Objects simplify early planning:
- Use them to set up zones (like classrooms, labs, or admin blocks) without defining every room yet
- Supports External Gross Area calculations
- Net Internal Area is still calculated from individual spaces
Improvements to Area Analysis
We’ve added:
- External Gross Area by department (via department objects)
- Net Internal Area and Count sorted by department (via space objects)
Things to Know
- Department Objects behave like space objects in terms of drawing and geometry
- They will interact with other geometry unless you lock them
- Filter and isolate departments easily for view creation or Present Mode
